Our discovery of this particular accolade is all thanks to a question from a member of our sales team: is Allagash White possibly one of the most-awarded beers of its style?
Turns out, it is.

To make this claim, we looked back and tabulated results from what we consider to be the three most prestigious beer awards in the world: World Beer Cup, Great American Beer Festival, and Euro Beer Star awards. In addition to a simple count of medals, we also pulled results and reviewed literally thousands of medal winners over decades in all categories and styles. The result was that we can confidently say that Allagash White is the most-awarded Belgian-style witbier in the world.
At all three festivals, Allagash White has earned 10 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals, and 5 Bronze medals—18 medals in all. Weighting the medals, so that Gold is worth 3 points, Silver 2 and Bronze 1, that amounts to 41 total points. The second-place Belgian-style witbier has a total of 11 medals (6G, 3S, 2B) for a total of 26 points. So, at this point, it’s a pretty comfortable margin for Allagash White.

In 1995, Rob Tod opened a brewery. The year prior, he worked at Otter Creek Brewery—doing everything from washing kegs, to cleaning tanks, to brewing beer. Rob rented a spot in the corner of a warehouse in an industrial park and called it Allagash Brewing Company.
1999 - Digging in on Belgian Beers
It was also around this time that we picked up a brewer from Vermont named Jason Perkins. A dedicated brewer who would help us expand our brewing operation far beyond that one Belgian-style wheat beer.
2010 - Night of the Great Thirst
Our spontaneously fermented beers happened to be so well received that we were invited to a Lambic festival in Belgium named “The Night of the Great Thirst.” For the next four festivals, held biannually, we were the only American brewery.
Somewhere around April of 1995, Rob Tod, the founder of Allagash, had brewed his very first batches of Allagash White. It was a hazy, Belgian-style wheat beer that most bartenders and beer store owners had no idea what to do with. It was cloudy. It smelled like citrus. And, it turns out that, it was destined to become the most awarded wheat beer in the world.
To celebrate 30 years of Allagash White, and so much more, we planned events, we recorded a podcast, and we made this limited-edition throwback can released in a limited drop, only at the brewery.
