Our summer beer 'Extra 4' is available now! It could be considered as a classic 'single', referring to the amount of malt used in the brew. Using more hops than our other beers, it perfectly embodies the summer vibe. It's a super refreshing beer and forms a perfect partner in crime with the grill season. For a beer that holds a very modest alcohol percentage of 4.8%, it's still a top-fermented beer. And it's bottle conditioned, which makes for a great mouthfeel with that typical St.Bernardus yeast strain providing fruitiness and character to this masterpiece. ブロンドビールで4.8%の低いアルコールであるがこの醸造所独 特の酵母から来る風味を持つ。そしてこのビールは新しく醸造されたものではなく復刻されたものである。元来ベルギーの修道院にて醸造されるビールの中、修道士が日々の生活の中で飲むために低アルコールのビールが醸造されており、そのビールは「シングル」と呼ばれていた。エクストラ4は時代の流れもあり70年代前半には姿を消したが40年の時を経て再度醸造される事となったのである。
St.Bernardus Extra 4 is a refreshing blond beer that is brewed in the classic ‘Single’ style. Since 2014, the beer has been part of our range again. Although it never completely disappeared during the licensing period (1946-1992), it was only brewed for consumption by the clergymen themselves.
St.Bernardus Extra 4 shines with the golden hue of pale straw, topped off with a snowy-white collar. A wide range of refreshing, zesty and floral touches including citrus and cloves with a hint of pepper are perfectly balanced by the refined aroma of hops without suffering from an overload of bitterness. Extra 4 is the ultimate thirst-quencher.

第二次世界大戦後間もなく、元々トラピスト派修道院の跡地を受け継いだエヴァリスト・デコニンクは、ウェストフレテレンのトラピスト修道士たちからライセンスを受けてトラピストビールを醸造、販売するよう奨励され、当初は30年間の契約で行われました。醸造長マシュー・ザフランスキー（ポーランド系）は、チーズ工房のすぐ隣に新しい醸造所が設立されたため、レシピと有名なセント・シクストゥス酵母の両方を持ち込み、その貴重なノウハウを新しい場所にもたらしました。1986年に Belgomilkが事業を引き継ぎました。1960年代初頭、ベルナデット・デコニンク（エヴァリストの娘）の夫、ガイ・クラウスが醸造所に加わりました。ライセンス契約を更新するためにウェストフレテレン修道院と交渉する機会を持ち、1962年に1992年まで醸造を続けるために新たな30年間の契約が締結されました。
In 1992 the agreement expired for good, as the Trappist breweries had decided to award the "Authentic Trappist Beer" label exclusively to beers that had been brewed inside an abbey. From then on, the brewery’s beers were marketed under the St.Bernardus brand name. This period was marked by uncertainty as the brewery tried hard to revive its fortunes and inject new life into its brand.

Hans Depypere took over the brewery in 1998 and, slowly but surely, put it back on the rails. Under his management, brewery sales grew from a few hundred thousand litres to a high of 4 million litres according to 2017 sales figures. This required a fair amount of investment, so far this has meant the opening of an entirely new wing in 2018, a new reception area for brewery tours and, to top it all off, an impressive 360° roof top bar that also serves as a tasting room and goes under the eloquent name of 'Bar Bernard'.
